El número incluye un total de seis artículos y una recensión, más la presentación, en la que se examina esta cuestión desde diferentes perspectivas. Los dos primeros artículos tratan la cuestión de quién debe ser moralmente considerado (el primero desde un punto de vista teórico y el segundo mediante un enfoque más empírico). El siguiente trabajo nos presenta una panorámica de los problemas de la llamada ética animal mediante un estudio de la que ha sido la bibliografía publicada en este campo a lo largo de las últimas décadas. Y el artículo que sigue estudia esta cuestión desde el punto de vista de la historia de la filosofía. Finalmente, los últimos dos trabajos estudian algunas de las consecuencias que se pueden derivar de ello, en particular en relación al conflicto existente entre las posiciones a favor de la consideración de los animales y las de corte ecologista.

De esta forma, los textos recogidos aquí nos proporcionan, en conjunto, un cuadro muy amplio de las distintas temáticas tratadas en el campo que ya ha sido denominado como “ética animal”.

Como veis, estamos ante un número muy diverso. En primer lugar, el artículo que lo abre, a cargo de Elisa Aaltola, “Three Standard Arguments against the Individual Value of Non-Human Animals”, examina la cuestión central en ética animal. Esta consiste en la aceptabilidad o no del especismo. Aaltola evalúa los diferentes argumentos con los que se defiende la exclusión moral de los animales no humanos, y distingue tres grandes clases en las que los podemos clasificar. Llama a estos el argumento de las capacidades (the capacity argument), el argumento humanista (the humanistic argument) y el argumento de las relaciones especiales (the special relations argument). Según el primero, tendríamos razones para considerar a los animales no humanos desfavorablemente en relación a los seres humanos porque no poseen ciertas capacidades (fundamentalmente, de tipo cognitivo). Conforme al segundo, la mera pertenencia a la especie humana sería algo moralmente relevante. Y según el tercero, el hecho de que tenemos ciertas relaciones especiales (por ejemplo, de tipo emotivo) con los humanos, lleva a que podamos o incluso debamos considerarlos por encima de los demás animales.

Aaltola examina los presupuestos en los que se basan estos tres distintos argumentos y concluye que ninguno de ellos tiene éxito. Lo hace indicando distintos errores empíricos en sus asunciones, pero, sobre todo, apuntando al hecho de que descansan en criterios que no deberíamos considerar moralmente relevantes.

El siguiente trabajo, “The Moral Consideration of Nonhuman Animals: How Can We Identify Which Beings Are Conscious?”, de Walter Sánchez Suárez, examina también la cuestión de si los animales no humanos son moralmente considerables. Pero lo hace desde un punto de vista más empírico. En él, Suárez parte de indicar que desde toda una serie de teorías éticas se ha defendido que el criterio para ser tenido en cuenta en nuestras decisiones morales debe ser la sintiencia (conclusión a la que llega también el artículo anteriormente presentado). La pregunda que se formula ante esto es ¿qué seres son sintientes?

Suárez examina los criterios de los que disponemos para reconocer la presencia de consciencia, y por tanto de sintiencia, en un organismo. El sentido común nos lleva a considerar que los animales (o un gran número de ellos) son sintientes sobre la base de la conducta que manifiestan. Suárez analiza la cuestión teniendo en cuenta las evidencias que con respecto a tal criterio nos proporciona la etología cognitiva conjuntamente con las razones relacionadas con la fisiología de los animales y la lógica evolutiva. Suárez formula así un argumento de carácter compuesto que le lleva a concluir que tenemos muy fuertes razones para pensar que los vertebrados y un gran número de invertebrados son sintientes. Si esto es así, concluye, podemos afirmar que han de ser moralmente considerables.

A continuación, en el siguiente artículo, Daniel Dorado nos presenta cuáles han sido los ejes sobre los que han pivotado los debates en ética animal en la literatura actual. En “La consideración moral de los animales no humanos en los últimos cuarenta años: una bibliografía anotada”, Dorado expone las ideas defendidas en cada una de las obras más representativas publicadas desde el inicio del trato contemporáneo de esta cuestión (a principios de los años setenta) y repasa las temáticas principales que estas han tratado. Constituye, así un texto que será de gran interés para quienes no tengan aún un dominio del trabajo que se ha realizado en este campo, y resultará especialmente útil a quienes quieran comenzar a investigar en él.

En el texto siguiente, “Aristóteles y la consideración moral de los animales”, Luís Garcia Soto hace una aportación a los estudios en ética animal desde el punto de vista de la historia de la filosofía. Como indica el título de su artículo, examina la atención dada por el estagirita a los animales. Tradicionalmente, se ha asumido la idea de que Aristóteles habría mantenido una actitud desdeñosa hacia estos. Soto indica que esta idea es hasta cierto punto cuestionable. Lo hace examinando el modo en el que Aristóteles se ocupa de los animales en varios distintos ámbitos: el de la biología, donde el estagirita mostraría un notable interés por su conocimiento, el de la psicología, donde habría reconocido un continuo entre humanos y otros animales, y, destacadamente, el ético-político, donde mantendría una posición un tanto ambigua. Soto apunta que, conviviendo con otros textos en los que los animales salen mal parados, al menos hay un lugar en el que Aristóteles parece suscribir la idea de que el respeto por la vida de los animales sería algo “justo por naturaleza”, si bien hay una serie de limitaciones al alcance de tal prescripción que es preciso tener en cuenta.

El siguiente artículo, “Debunking the Idyllic View of Natural Processes: Population Dynamics and Suffering in the Wild”, examina un problema de carácter práctico que está recibiendo una atención creciente en el campo de la ética animal: la cuestión de la relevancia moral de los daños sufridos por los animales por causas naturales. Ciertamente, el problema práctico al que más se han enfrentado quienes han trabajado en el ámbito de la ética y los animales ha sido el del uso como recursos a manos humanas. Esto es normal, debido a que los seres humanos utilizamos a innumerables animales como recursos de manera sistemática e institucionalizada para distintos fines (ocio, confección de ropa, alimentación, experimentación…).

Ante esto, es comprensible que la pregunta fundamental que surja sea: ¿tenemos la obligación moral de abandonar el consumo de animales como comida y los restantes usos que hacemos de estos? Las otras cuestiones que afectan a los animales no humanos quedarían, así, en un plano secundario. Ahora bien, ¿es esto correcto? Los animales no solo son dañados por los seres humanos, sino que también lo son por otras causas independientes de la acción humana. Este artículo apunta que esto ocurre de manera generalizada en el mundo natural, en el que los animales perecen cotidianamente de hambre, por enfermedades, por la depredación, los parásitos, las durezas del entorno y otras razones. Y afirma que, contrariamente a lo que se piensa de manera común, el sufrimiento y la muerte prematura de los animales en la naturaleza sobrepasa con creces al bienestar que experimentan. Ello se debe, en particular, al hecho de que la mayor parte de los animales mueren al poco de comenzar a existir.

A continuación, incluimos aquí un importante artículo de uno de los autores clásicos en el ámbito de la ética animal, Steve Sapontzis, traducido por primera vez al castellano. Se trata de “La depredación”, uno de los textos que lanzó el examen del problema de nuestras obligaciones hacia el sufrimiento de los animales salvajes. Este trabajo trata, pues, un problema estrechamente ligado al del artículo que le precede en este número. Se centra, en concreto, en examinar una de las posibles consecuencias que se podría seguir cuando se considera en serio lo apuntado en el artículo anterior acerca del desvalor en la naturaleza. De este modo, ambos artículos se complementan para ofrecer una panorámica de este problema desde diversos puntos de vista.

A menudo se considera que la idea de que los humanos debamos intervenir para paliar los daños que padecen los animales es absurda, incluso en aquellos casos donde esto resulte posible y no tenga consecuencias indeseables. En este ensayo Sapontzis examina si esto es realmente así. Argumenta que tal intento de desestimar esta cuestión no tiene éxito, y que en realidad no hay razones para negarnos a intervenir en la naturaleza para reducir los daños padecidos por los animales, siempre y cuando nuestra intervención no ocasione un mal mayor para los animales del que les ahorre. Esto enfrenta de manera radical a la posición favorable a la consideración de los intereses de los animales sintientes y a los posicionamientos ecologistas.

Por último, este número monográfico concluye con una recensión de Cátia Faria del libro de Tzachi Zamir, Ethics and the Beast (Princeton University Press, 2007), que plantea de nuevo la cuestión de cuáles han de ser los límites de la consideración moral, y de las implicaciones prácticas que ello puede tener. Faria critica el enfoque de Zamir, que defiende que se dé una consideración moral avanzada a los animales no humanos pero sin rechazar el especismo. Faria expone las inconsitencias que surgen ante tal propuesta, y los argumentos por los que tal posición tendría que ser rechazada.

En definitiva, estamos ante un número muy variado que creemos que ofrece una perspectiva muy amplia de lo que ha sido y continúa siendo objeto de debate en el ámbito de la ética animal. Esperamos que este número sirva no solamente para presentar el estado del debate en este campo, sino también para contribuir a su desarrollo, que se prevé particularmente rico en el futuro.

Outline: Strategies to Defend Nonhuman Animals. A Map to the Arguments for and against Them

Suppose there is a rabbit and a fox that is about to capture and eat her. We are witnessing this, and we have two rations of vegan food. We consider what to do. Among the different ways in which we could act there are the following three ones:

(1) We eat one of the rations of vegan food and see how the fox catches and eats the rabbit.

(2) We give the fox one ration of our vegan food and we kill and eat the rabbit ourselves.

(3) We give the fox one ration of our vegan food, we eat the other one and the rabbit runs free to live her life.

The paper discusses what should we do in a situation such as this. It concludes that we should be concerned with all the harms that nonhuman animals suffer, including those which aren’t caused by humans, but for what can be called “natural reasons”. You can see the paper here: 

Disvalue in Nature and Intervention

The paper has been published in the Brazilian journal on animal ethics Pensata Animal (which includes texts both in Portuguese and English), the published version of the paper can be read here (although this published version has some mistakes which you won’t find in the version of the paper I linked above). This journal has included an interesting section (in Portuguese and English) in which different articles deal with the problem of wild animal suffering, predation and intervention in nature for the sake of nonhuman animals.

La argumentación de Singer en Liberación animal

Este texto examina los presupuestos en los que descansa este libro de Singer. Se afirma a menudo que este es un trabajo de tipo utilitarista. Por otra parte, lo que Singer intenta hacer en él es defender la consideración moral de los animales no humanos, y criticar toda una serie de formas en las que estos son explotados, desde un punto de vista amplio, no comprometido con ninguna teoría ética (a diferencia de lo que hace, por ejemplo, en Ética práctica). Procede así para que su planteamiento que pueda ser aceptado por el mayor número posible de lectores y lectoras. Singer hace esto centrando su argumento en dos ideas: hemos de evitar causar sufrimiento y hemos de considerar todos los intereses de los distintos individuos de forma igualitaria.

¿Cómo hay que interpretar, pues, la posición que se asume en Liberación animal? En realidad, en este libro Singer asume tal posición de mínimos y evita el utilitarismo de manera general; pero cuando se enfrenta a ciertos problemas (fundamentalmente, la suma de intereses), presenta soluciones basadas en su concepción utilitarista. En el caso del interés en vivir sucede algo semejante. Pero la solución que presenta Singer acerca de este, que establece diferencias entre distintos animales, no depende de la asunción de un punto de vista utilitarista. De lo que depende es de la concepción concreta que él asume de en qué consiste el daño de la muerte (que, como se argumenta en este artículo, resulta muy cuestionable).

Quienes queráis leer sobre esto más en detalle, podéis ver un artículo que salió en la Revista de Filosofía (que publica la Universidad Complutense de Madrid). En este, se explica qué es el igualitarismo, se defiende este frente a algunas críticas algo técnicas que se le hacen y se explica en qué sentido es relevante en lo que toca a la consideración del interés en vivir y de la cuestión de la discriminación de los animales no humanos. I will be speaking at this conference. You can find below an abstract of the talk I will be giving. It’s a long abstract, which presents the main arguments why I think we should get rid of the concept of moral personhood, in particular given the way it’s currently understood.

The idea of moral personhood under fire

The concept of moral personhood plays a central role in a number of ethical theories. It is used to distinguish those entities that have certain capacities that are morally relevant. In these theories, moral persons always have moral status. According to some views, only persons are morally considerable. According to others, they deserve some special consideration other entities are not worthy of.

The capacities that render an entity a moral person are usually believed to be the same ones that make it a person in a metaphysical sense. But these are not the only two meanings of the word ‘person’. The term is also used in the legal realm to refer to those entities that have the capacity to sue. As we all know, it is also used in common language to refer to those beings that belong to the human species.

It is commonly assumed that persons in the metaphysical, legal, moral and common sense meanings coincide, that is, that they are the same entities. The picture that results from this is one in which humans (and only humans) are entities of a certain kind, the kind of beings that are morally considerable or deserve special moral consideration.

This entire picture is untenable.

First, the domain that the term ‘person’ has in common language and in the moral, legal and the metaphysical realms differ significantly. There are legal persons who are not metaphysical ones or moral ones, there are legal, metaphysical and moral persons who are not human beings, and there are humans who are not moral or metaphysical persons.

Second, the division between animals and persons, which is often made in theories of personal identity, is confusing, since it may lead us to think nonhuman animals are not persons. According to this view, animals are somatic entities while persons are psychological ones. But we have every reason to believe that nonhuman animals who have mental states are metaphysical persons.

Third, the capacities that are relevant when deciding who deserves moral consideration are possessed not only by human beings, but also by other conscious animals.

Fourth, the whole idea of moral status should be rejected. If the concept of moral status were simply a synonym of “moral consideration”, it would be a superfluous one. However, it is commonly used in a different way, to claim that those individuals who have certain capacities that grant personhood are to be morally considered in a privileged way. Against this view, what we should take into account is simply the weight of the morally relevant interests different individuals have. This renders the idea of moral personhood either superfluous or unjustified.

Para redactar este texto, me pasaron un cuestionario (con preguntas no muy comunes), que os reproduzco a continuación por si os resultase de interés.

1. ¿Qué características son las que sobresalen en un ser humano especista de nuestros tiempos?

Bueno, la mayoría de los seres humanos son especistas, y la mayoría de ellos nunca se han parado a pensar en qué justificación podría haber para ello. Simplemente asumen que es así. Lo cual es normal, dado que desde pequeños nos educan en la idea de que los animales son seres inferiores que podemos utilizar a nuestro antojo. No se trata (salvo excepciones) de que la gente quiera dañar a los animales no humanos, los animales no humanos son explotados porque existe una demanda generalizada de bienes y servicios de origen animal. Y esta se debe a que la gente no ha asumido todavía que todos los seres con intereses propios deben ser respetados de forma plena y sin discriminación.

2. ¿Cuál es tu manera de tocar el antropocentrismo con un público que no está consciente del tema, ni se ha dado cuenta de que lo practica?

El reto aquí es saber comunicar ciertas ideas de manera que quienes nos escuchan nos entiendan y no se pongan a la defensiva. El mensaje que queremos transmitir contiene varias ideas: (i) Los animales no humanos pueden sufrir y disfrutar como nosotros. (ii) Sin embargo, son discriminados, y como consecuencia son sistemáticamente empleados como objetos para nuestro uso, lo que les causa un daño inmenso. (iii) Ninguno de los intentos de justificar todo esto tiene éxito.

El desafío aquí pasa, como he apuntado, por hacer que la gente no se sienta atacada por estas razones, sino que las comprenda e interiorice.

La gran mayoría de la gente nunca se ha parado a pensar en las razones para no discriminar a los animales no humanos, ni tiene realmente ni idea de la realidad sufrida por estos. De hecho, mucha gente no conoce en qué consiste el antiespecismo, y cree tal vez, equivocadamente, que tiene que ver con el ecologismo (pese a que son movimientos diferentes, uno busca que se respete a los ecosistemas y especies y el otro que se respete a los individuos sintientes).

Por este motivo, no se trata de culparlos porque su modo de vida suponga que se explote a los animales. Por el contrario, de lo que se trata es, simplemente, de concientizarlos en relación al daño que los animales sufren por ello.

3. ¿Cuál es el plus ético de ser antiespecista? O ¿es simplemente un deber natural y científico?

Quizás haya un plus que consista en poder mirarse a uno mismo o misma y saber que está haciendo lo correcto. Pero los motivos para combatir el especismo no son propiamente esos, sino el hecho de que esta discriminación no es justificable, y de que innumerables animales se ven terriblemente dañados por ella.

Actualmente los animales no humanos son empleados masivamente para el entretenimiento, la confección de ropa, la experimentación o la alimentación. Y, además, son dejados a su suerte en muchos casos en los que podrían ser ayudados (por ejemplo, un montañista perdido es rescatado, pero un animal salvaje que muere de hambre no es alimentado incluso en casos en los que hacerlo es algo perfectamente posible). Esto responde a una mentalidad especista que, sin embargo, podemos dejar de lado. Incluso aunque ello no nos beneficie a nosotros y nosotras, los beneficiará a ellos, a los animales no humanos.

Y el hecho es que es perfectamente posible vivir de modo vegano (el veganismo es el modo de vida consistente en el rechazo del uso de animales en cualquier ámbito). Y también lo es ayudar a los animales no humanos al menos en situaciones en las que ayudaríamos a seres humanos, como en el ejemplo dado arriba.

4. ¿Cómo replantear una visión de igualdad entre animales no humanos y humanos?

Tanto los animales no humanos como los humanos tenemos la capacidad de sufrir y disfrutar. Eso nos debe hacer iguales a la hora de ser respetados. Y es que respetar a alguien no es otra cosa que tener en cuenta de qué manera pueden nuestras acciones dañar o beneficiarlo, adecuando a ello nuestra conducta. Por lo tanto, lo que debería contar a la hora de respetar a alguien es precisamente eso, que pueda sufrir o disfrutar.

A veces se dice que no debemos respetar a los animales no humanos porque no tienen capacidades intelectuales como las nuestras. Pero este argumento no funciona. Hay que tener en cuenta, por ejemplo, que un enorme número de seres humanos tampoco poseen tales capacidades (por ejemplo, los niños pequeños, o aquellos afectados por lesiones cerebrales graves o enfermedades que afectan a nuestra cognición). Y, sin embargo, se considera comúnmente que deben ser respetados. Tal respeto es inconsistente con el citado argumento. El problema de fondo radica en que lo que tendríamos que tener en cuenta es el sufrimiento y disfrute de cada individuo, y no sus capacidades intelectuales.

5. ¿Consideras que, así como en las eras humanas pasamos del teocentrismo al antropocentrismo, podríamos pasar a una era más antiespecista?

En cierto sentido sí, esa evolución forma parte de un progreso moral conforme al cual la sociedad y sus individuos van teniendo progresivamente una actitud más responsable, más informada y más madura, en la que vayamos dejando atrás mitos sin justificación. (Aun así, también es cierto que podríamos haber pasado directamente del teocentrismo a una ética no antrpocéntrica).

En línea con esto creo que podemos considerar algunos otros ejemplos. Antiguamente, discriminaciones como el racismo o el sexismo gozaban de una aceptación mucho mayor que la que pueden tener hoy en día. Sin embargo, con el paso del tiempo, han ido siendo rechazadas cada vez con más fuerza. Y cabe pensar que algo semejante va a suceder en el caso del especismo. A pesar de su amplia aceptación en la actualidad, es de esperar que su progresivo cuestionamiento terminará llevando a un rechazo muy generalizado, incluso aunque a día de hoy pensemos que este es tan improbable como hace siglos se podía pensar que lo era el cuestionamiento de otras discriminaciones y puntos de vista que ahora son ya parte del pasado.

Entrevista para Mexican Vegan

I am honored by the attention that Hansen has given to my paper, and want to thank him for his challenging criticisms, which provides me with the opportunity of further clarifying the views expressed in the paper. I am also very thankful to Animal Rights Zone for providing a forum in which these issues can be discussed.

Hansen’s interesting  objections cover several issues, which I will examine and respond to in turn. First, I will examine those objections that are related to my examination of different moral positions. Second, I will examine the objections that have to do with definitions of the concepts I use.

Different speciesist positions

Hansen says that in “What Is Speciesism?” I fail “to accommodate the wide spectrum of behavioral responses (from mild to moderate to radical) in defense of animals”.

This is a good opportunity to clarify an important point made in the paper. In it, there’s a section called “Simple and Combined Speciesist Positions” (pp. 254-57 in the published version of the paper), which actually has the purpose of explaining this. Let me explain my theory regarding this, as I present it in the paper.

Speciesism distinguishes between two different kinds of individuals: (1) those who belong to a certain species, who are morally considered; and (2) those who do not, who aren’t morally considered. So, if the only criterion for respecting individuals were speciesism, those who would be discriminated against by it would receive no consideration whatsoever. They wouldn’t count at all. Hence, those who maintain a simple speciesist position have no respect at all for those they discriminate against. So they accept whatever is done to them. They not only oppose animal equality, they even oppose animal welfare.

Some people have simple speciesist views. However, most people don’t. Most people combine such speciesist views with other reasons, according to which those who are discriminated against by speciesism can nevertheless be respected to some extent. This is what happens in an example Hansen presents. Hansen says that “many might be appalled at the cruelty in CAFOs, but not object to harvesting honey even though it ‘belongs to the bees’ or using oxen or horses as ‘work animals’ ”.

Exactly! This happens very often. These people hold what I’ve called a combined speciesist position. They accept using nonhumans for purposes for which they would never use human beings (unless they accepted human slavery, of course). So they clearly discriminate against those who aren’t members of the human species. That is, they are speciesist. However, they also defend that nonhuman animals should be respected to some extent. This is the reason why they reject factory farming. So speciesism is not the only view they hold. Their position is a combination of speciesism and another view, that is, one which allows for respect for nonhuman animals.

So there are basically two simple views we may hold: simple speciesism and nonspeciesism. Apart from these views, we may also hold a combination of speciesism with other views. Among animal defenders, some of them defend a fully nonspeciesist view, actually an antispeciesist view. Others don’t do this: they defend nonhuman animals to some extent, in fact some of them do so to the extent that they reject their exploitation, but still discriminate against them.

Antispeciesism and animal rights

In relation to the question of the different speciesist positions that may be, there’s something else I need to point out. Hansen points out: “Horta defines ‘speciesism’ so broadly that even Tom Regan’s position (though admittedly problematic) turns out to be speciesist, because Regan’s criteria favor mammals or ‘higher’ animals. Yet, as most everyone knows, Regan has been a staunch defender of animal rights since his seminal work was published in 1983”.

I certainly agree that Regan is a staunch defender of animal rights (and not only since the publication of The Case in 1983, he had already published “The Moral Status of Animals” in the Canadian Journal of Philosophy in 1975). However, I also think that, unfortunately, his position regarding the lifeboat scenario is speciesist. In my view, his claim that a million dogs should be sent to death to save one human life is untenable unless we defend a speciesist position.

But there is no contradiction here. As I pointed out once at the Live Chat at ARZone, we must distinguish clearly between what ‘animal rights’ and ‘antispeciesism’ mean. Let me copy here what I said then (with some added comments):

The term ‘animal rights’ is sometimes used in philosophical debates to name the view that moral rights exist and that all sentient animals have them. It’s been mainly used, though, to mean all sentient animals should have legal rights. So you can perfectly defend animal rights, that is, legal animal rights even if you don’t believe that moral rights exist.

On the prevailing conception of what having rights means, a rights holder can’t be used as property. So if you’re for animal rights then you must defend that the use of animals has to be abolished, although you won’t stop here, because if animals have rights, then they should also be protected against other things apart from their exploitation by humans. Human rights not only protect you against slavery. The same happens with animal rights.

However, you can respect someone’s rights yet discriminate against her.

A racist individual doesn’t violate the rights of black people if he tries to convince his daughter not to marry black men. But that’s racist and morally unacceptable. Equally, you can respect animal rights yet discriminate against nonhuman animals.

For instance, a vegan speciesist wouldn’t violate the rights of animals by deciding to donate to charities that help humans rather than helping animals because he thinks that humans count for more due to his speciesist attitude. [This is something very common, there are many vegans who do much more to help humans than to help nonhuman animals.]

Antispeciesism is the opposition (or the struggle against) the discrimination of those who don’t belong to a certain species. Antispeciesism opposes all discrimination of nonhuman animals, even if it’s carried out while respecting their rights.

I think we should reject speciesism, and I think speciesism is the key term to understand the current relation between humans and other animals.

So being for animal rights is perfectly compatible with accepting some combined speciesist position. In my view, we should oppose any such view and defend antispeciesism, which in practice means defending that nonhuman animals be protected by legal rights, but also that they shouldn’t be discriminated against in any way. The abolition of slavery didn’t mean the end of racism. There’s been two hundred years since Haiti and Mexico led the way to such abolition, yet racism is still very much alive all around the world. This is a lesson antispeciesists must learn.

Conflicts of interests: Is there such thing as “moral subjecthood”?

Hansen also points out, in passing, that “our reflective moral intuitions generally lead us to believe “that ‘moral subjecthood’ is almost certainly a matter of degree—corresponding roughly to a hierarchy of conscious self-awareness in the animal kingdom”.

I disagree with this view. I think we should respect everyone who has interests, and that the attention that we should give to them must depend on the weight of those interests, rather than with any hierarchy. So if one animal is in terrible pain and another one is suffering some mild pain, and I can help one of them but not both, I think I should help the first one, regardless of anything else. In making this decision I don’t need to know the species to which these two animals belong.

What if the question is not about relieving the suffering of some animals, but about saving their lives? There are two possible views about this that are both compatible with a nonspeciesist position. Some people think anyone who is alive loses the same by dying, so we should toss a coin. That’s a noncomparative view regarding the interest in living. But you can also hold a nonspeciesist comparative view regarding the interest in living. Suppose you have to decide whether to save the life of an old man, who is, say, 90, and of a child who is 10. You may think that the old man has lived so far much more than the child, and that he’s likely to live less than the child in the future. Given this, according to a comparative view, you should save the child. And this is so regardless of the species. This view entails also that if you should choose between saving this 90 year old human or, say, a 10 year old elephant, you should save the elephant.

But note that none of this has to do with anything such as different “moral status” or “moral subjecthood”. It just has to do with weighing the interests of those involved in the decision we must make. Suppose that in the example, the question were not about saving the life of the young elephant and the old man, but about relieving one of them from some pain. Suppose we can just help one of them, and the elephant is about to suffer some minor injury which would cause her some mild pain and the old man is about to suffer a serious injury which would cause him terrible pain. In that case, you should help the old man. (If the situation were the opposite one, and the elephant were to suffer the serious injury and the man were to suffer the minor one, we should help the elephant).

At any rate, let me state clearly that the question of “who should be saved” in cases such as these has in itself nothing to do with the question of speciesism. I’ve presented two views (a noncomparative one and a comparative one) that are both compatible with a nonspeciesist position. In fact, there are many views regarding what to do in these cases that are perfectly compatible with speciesism and with nonspeciesism. The purpose of the paper “What Is Speciesism?” is not, in any way, to deal with those views, but, simply, to explain what speciesism is. (This is the reason why I will not address here other points that Hansen makes in his post, such as those having to do with religion, since they don’t deal with the content of the paper).

In light of this, we may see the response I can give to Hansen when he points out this: “Horta fails to address the ‘priority problem’—that is, the necessity of favoring one individual over another when conflicts of interest arise, or so-called ‘lifeboat crises’ ”.

As I said, the purpose of the paper is to clarify the concept of speciesism. In the paper I also deal with some related issues, but just to the extent that they are closely related to what speciesism is. So the paper doesn’t attempt to be an account of all the different practical problems we may find. In the paper I certainly didn’t address the question Hansen mentions here, just as I didn’t address many other problems in the paper. But that was not a mistake. Simply, those issues are not what the paper was intended to deal with. Anyway, I have explained above some ways in which we may think we should act when we face conflicts of interests. As I said, there isn’t a single response we may give from a nonspeciesist viewpoint. Rather, we may hold different views regarding this which are perfectly compatible with a nonspeciesist position.

Hansen also points out: “[e]ven the most ardent AR defender will save his mother before his dog from a fire, or favor his dog over the ants or worms in his back yard. If this is ‘relational speciesism’, then everyone is guilty”.

First of all, I’d say that it’s never clear what all AR defenders would do. We never know. Having said this, I’d point out that if someone would always save a human (any human) over a nonhuman animal (any nonhuman animal), then that person would be speciesist. As I said above, this doesn’t mean that in order to avoid being speciesist in such cases one should toss a coin. One may well engage in a comparison of who we think would be more affected by death (that is, by her or his own death), but that comparison may imply that we should save some nonhumans over some humans. Now, Hansen is presenting a different criterion here, according to which, we should save the lives of those we have special relations with (or, at least, we would be justified in doing so). This idea, in itself, it’s not speciesist. Note that many people have close relationships with some nonhuman animals. If the criterion Hansen is presenting here is right, all these people would be fully justified in saving the nonhuman animals whom they love, rather than a human being they don’t know. If someone says they would be doing something wrong, because they should save the human first, then that person would be speciesist. Moreover, that person would be rejecting the very idea Hansen seems to be defending here (that we are justified in saving those we love), because that person would be denying that those who save the animals they love would be justified in doing so.

What is anthropocentrism?

Hansen argues that my definition of anthropocentrism is too restricted. He says that I define anthropocentrism as speciesism against nonhuman animals. He, however, thinks we can use the term ‘anthropocentrism’ in a different way. He says anthropocentrism “represents a mere point of view—that of the human agent—in the same benign sense that ‘felinism’ may be said to represent a cat’s point of view”.

This needs some clarifications. I basically agree that we can use the term anthropocentrism to name views that aren’t moral ones. In fact, I had this in mind when I wrote this in the paper (in p. 258):

“Anthropocentrism” denotes, in general, the view that considers humans as central. Given this, it can be used in the moral arena to indicate the view that considers the satisfaction of human interests as central.

My intention here was to draw a distinction between anthropocentrism “in general” and anthropocentrism in the moral arena. Since the paper deals with moral concepts, I assumed that it would be understood that in the paper I just referred to moral anthropocentrism, and not to other fields in which the term anthropocentrism is used (moreover, as I mention in note 19 in the paper, the paper deals with the concept of anthropocentrism as it is used when it comes to the problem of which beings are morally considerable; there are other moral problems with regards to which the term ‘anthropocentrism’ has been used that the paper doesn’t examine). Hansen’s critique has shown to me that I should have made this much clearer in the paper.

So yes, when we don’t talk about moral questions, but about the way we see things, there’s a certain concept of anthropocentrism we may use. Such concept, which we may call ‘epistemic anthropocentrism’, would denote the idea that we can only see things from a human view point and thus can’t properly understand the viewpoint other animals may have. This appears to be Hansen’s view. I don’t claim this idea is right, neither do I claim it’s wrong, I just want to point out here that it’s different from moral anthropocentrism. Whether you are an epistemic anthropocentrist or not is irrelevant for whether you defend moral anthropocentrism. Although I think that having a speciesist attitude may drive one to have a certain epistemic anthropocentrist position, the two views do not necessarily come together. Accepting Hansen’s view as regards the way we can see things is perfectly compatible with both the defense and the rejection of discrimination against nonhuman animals. Just as it is rejecting Hansen’s view. “What Is Speciesism?” deals with moral concepts, so it tackles moral anthropocentrism.

Incidentally, note also that the paper doesn’t assume from the beginning that anthropocentrism is a form of speciesism. Part of it examines the question of whether this is so or not (pages 261-64 in the published version of the paper). Only after an examination of the arguments that can be presented in defense of anthropocentrism the paper concludes that none of them is successful, which means that anthropocentrism is unjustified, and thus, is a form of speciesism. I say more on why the lack of justification is key for this in the next section.

Discrimination and justification

Hansen also points out this: “Horta claims that anthropocentrism, like speciesism, engages in ‘unjustified discrimination’. My brief reply is that discrimination based on harmability (not species membership) is routinely and necessarily done: e.g., we favor people and mammals over spiders and mosquitos. Discrimination is not always a pejorative term. Nobody accuses predatory animals of ‘speciesism’ when they kill their prey; neither do we hold them morally praiseworthy or blameworthy for their actions”.

I disagree with this criticism on the basis of the definition of discrimination on which my conception of speciesism is based, which is explicitly defended in the paper. It’s this one:

 x discriminated against = df x is treated or considered in a way that is unjustifiably disadvantageous with respect to some y

In other words:

To be discriminated against is to be treated or considered in a way that is unjustifiably disadvantageous with respect to someone else.

Treating or considering someone in a disadvantageous way is discrimination if and only if it is unjustified. If it’s justified, it’s not discrimination. So, if a man and a woman are paid differently for the same job because of their sex, that’s discriminatory. If they are paid differently because the man is working 40 hours and the woman is working 30 hours, then that’s not discriminatory.

This is the reason why in order to be a form of discrimination, any position which treats in a disadvantageous way those who do not belong to a certain species must be unjustified.

Moreover, it’s not discriminatory to not consider the interests of entities that aren’t sentient. The reason is that those entities simply have no interests to take into account.

The definition of speciesism

In the previous section I’ve mentioned the definition of speciesism I defend. In my view, speciesism, as a moral position, is the discrimination of nonhuman animals. More technically, in the paper I said (p. 247) that  “[s]peciesism is the unjustified disadvantageous consideration or treatment of those who are not classified as belonging to one or more particular species”. Hansen is not satisfied with my definition of speciesism. He proposes an alternative definition of this concept. He says that what we should label as speciesist are “clear cases of harm and oppression based on [biological] class differences that are morally irrelevant”.

I see two problems with this definition.

First, there are [biological] classes which are morally irrelevant and are different from species. Sex, for instance, is one. So, according to this definition, sexist discrimination would be an instance of speciesism, which is obviously not the case.

Second, harmful discrimination is just an instance of discrimination. Let me explain this. Suppose someone donates to children charities but donates less to those charities which take care of black children because he dislikes black people. That person would be racist, even though by acting in this way he wouldn’t be harming anyone, but actually benefiting both black and white children (he’d just benefit black children less). So there are many instances of discrimination (and, in particular, of speciesism) that aren’t instances of harm or oppression. Suppose someone who always stops if she sees a human being who has been injured in a car crash and needs help. Suppose, though, that he never stops when he finds nonhuman animals in those situations, because they aren’t human. Suppose she’s vegan. She wouldn’t be oppressing nonhumans. However, that person would be speciesist, because she’d be discriminating against those who don’t belong to the human species.

So that’s basically all I’d say as regards the objections presented by Paul Hansen, I think. Let me express again my gratitude again to him for his very interesting notes and challenging objections to the paper, as well as to Animal Rights Zone. I hope Hansen’s critique and my response may have helped the readers to understand better the points made in “What Is Speciesism?”

¿Cómo ha tenido lugar la reacción ante este activismo en defensa de los animales? ¿Cómo han procedido quienes la han impulsado? ¿Intentando aportar razones y respuestas frente a las evidencias y argumentos presentadas por los activistas antiespecistas? No. Mediante la represión arbitraria y la difusión de mentiras.

Aquí os reproduzco la nota explicativa de los hechos, a partir de la que han hecho pública las organizaciones Equanimal e Igualdad Animal.

Solidaridad con los activistas injustamente represaliados por defender a los animales

En la mañana del pasado 22 de junio tuvo lugar una acción sin precedente en nuestro país contra los defensores de los animales. Cerca de 200 agentes de la Guardia Civil (muchos de ellos con pasamontañas y metralletas) detuvieron a 11 activistas, mientras que otro más era puesto en busca y captura. Irrumpieron en sus domicilios, efectuando registros y llevándose todo lo que les pareció.

Los activistas permanecieron varios días incomunicados en sus calabozos. Una de ellas, Sharon Núñez, tuvo que ser hospitalizada con serios problemas de salud agravados por las penosas condiciones en las que estuvo durante su detención.

Finalmente, nueve de los activistas fueron puestos en libertad con cargos. Sin embargo, tres de ellos, Olaia Freiría, Eneko Pérez y Eladio Ferreira, fueron enviados a prisión preventiva por el juez instruye el caso José Antonio Vázquez Taín (del Juzgado de Instrucción nº2 de Santiago de Compostela). Los activistas permanecieron en la cárcel de Teixeiro durante tres semanas, hasta ser puestos en libertad por la Audiencia Provincial de A Coruña, que censuró como injustificada la acción del juez.

Esta ha sido una medida de castigo, en propias palabras del juez, de “escarmiento”, por el activismo que han llevado a cabo en las organizaciones Igualdad Animal y Equanimal.

Los activistas han sido acusados de realizar sueltas masivas de visones. Pero no hay ni puede haber absolutamente ninguna prueba contra estos activistas, ya que estos no han cometido lo que se les imputa.

También se ha acusado a los activistas de violentos e incluso llegado a afirmar que en los sitios web de las organizaciones se incluían instrucciones de cómo fabricar explosivos, ignorando que tanto Equanimal como Igualdad Animal son organizaciones que actúan pacíficamente. Su activismo va dirigido a cuestionar el especismo actualmente vigente en la sociedad denunciando las terribles agresiones que padecen los animales, tanto aquellos confinados y asesinados por la industria peletera, como los explotados en otros ámbitos.

El trabajo de las dos organizaciones se caracteriza por ir siempre con la cara por delante, procediendo a cara descubierta y con total transparencia, indicando en qué consisten sus acciones, revelando la identidad de los activistas que las llevan a cabo e incluso invitando a periodistas a que les acompañasen para ser testigos de las investigaciones y rescates y para dar a conocer a la sociedad la realidad de la explotación animal.

Esto no es, por tanto, más que un burdo intento de criminalización para frenar la acción de las dos organizaciones que han investigado a la industria peletera. Se puede ver aquí el resultado de la presión de los sectores dedicados a la explotación de los animales, que quieren frenar la difusión en la sociedad de un modo de vida libre de explotación animal, que llevan a cabo Igualdad Animal y Equanimal.

Con aisladas excepciones, los medios de comunicación han divulgado mentiras e infamias de los defensores de los animales, además de saltarse por completo toda presunción de inocencia. Han vinculado a los activistas antiespecistas con posiciones ecologistas y violentas. Sin embargo, estos activistas no son ecologistas, sino defensores de los animales. Y, como ya se ha insistido, ni ellos ni Equanimal o Igualdad Animal tiene nada que ver con ninguna clase de acción violenta.

La campaña Unidos Contra la Represión: En Defensa del Movimiento de Derechos Animales

En protesta contra esta injusticia, el pasado 13 de julio se lanzaba la campaña Unidos Contra la Represión: En Defensa del Movimiento de Derechos Animales. Esta defiende 3 objetivos fundamentales:

1. Reclamar el archivo de la causa.
2. Demandar que se tenga en cuenta la presunción de inocencia, y se ofrezca una exposición objetiva de los hechos.
3. Reivindicar la legitimidad de nuestro activismo en defensa de los animales.

En defensa de estos objetivos, y en apoyo a los activistas encausados, se han sucedido las movilizaciones de solidaridad tanto en el territorio español, en ciudades como Madrid, Barcelona, Vigo, Santiago de Compostela, Bilbao, Vitoria, Donosti, Sevilla, Málaga, Huelva, Granada, Zaragoza, Palma de Mallorca, Valencia, etc. Además de en cerca de 30 países de 4 continentes como Argentina, Chile, México, Perú, Venezuela, Colombia, Italia, EEUU, Canadá, Reino Unido, Portugal, Holanda, Francia, Bélgica, Polonia, Alemania, Austria, Finlandia, Croacia, Eslovenia, República Checa, India, Australia, Nueva Zelanda…

Estos actos culminaron con la celebración, el 23 de julio, del Día Internacional contrea la Represión del Movimiento de Derechos Animales en España. Se llevaron a cabo actos de protesta en alrededor de una docena de ciudades del territorio español, así como en muchos otros países.

Asimismo, se ha lanzado una campaña de adhesiones. Puede firmarse en contra de la represión de la defensa de los animales aquí. Además, solicitamos el apoyo de organizaciones y personalidades a la campaña, para lo cual pedimos que se escriba a Adhesiones@UnidosContraLaRepresion.org.

En estos momentos es necesaria vuestra solidaridad. La solidaridad de todas aquellas personas a favor del respeto por los animales, pues este montaje de desprestigio puede suponer un daño terrible para estos. Y también la solidaridad de todas aquellas personas que crean en la libertad de expresión y se opongan a la criminalización de quienes, por medios no violentos y a cara descubierta, luchan contra las injusticias que tienen lugar a día de hoy.

Tengo, sin embargo, la muy desagradable tarea de comunicaros que he tenido que cancelas los actos que quedaban de la gira de conferencias en México, en concreto en Mérida, Monterrey, Saltillo, San Luis Potosí y Guadalajara. Esto es una faena para quienes pensabais acudir, pero, sobre todo, es un palo verdaderamente terrible para las personas que han estado trabajando, muchísimo, para organizar tales actos. En especial, sé que lo es para Marcia Lara y Eva Nájera, así como para Dulce Ramírez, Lizbeth Muñoz, Diego Armando Aguirre Mendoza y para otras personas que han estado trabajando en esto. Habéis empleado un número de horas incontable y unos esfuerzos imposibles de estimar consiguiendo espacios, coordinando gente, diseñando, imprimiendo y distribuyendo cartelería, convocando y hablando con medios de comunicación… todo para que ahora ya no pueda ir. ¿Cómo podría compensaros por todo esto? Ojalá pudiese, aunque no creo que tenga ninguna forma en la que lo pueda hacer. La deuda que contraigo con vosotras es impagable. Desde hace meses, en que surgió la propuesta de la gira de conferencias, los habéis dado todo para que ello fuese posible allí, y el hecho de que haya tenido que cancelarlos entiendo que puede parecer incomprensible. Lo siento muchísismo, son realmente razones de fuerza mayor las que han hecho que tenga que volver a toda prisa y desconvocar los actos que tienen que ver, como os podéis imaginar, con la detención de 12 compañeros y compañeras en España y la represión que amenaza tener consecuencias aún mayores.

Cátia Faria presentará una comunicación con el título “Pessoas não humanas ? O estatuto moral dos grandes símios”. Cátia defiende que los criterios para ser moralmente considerado son satisfechos no solo por los seres humanos, y que si nos preguntamos por las razones para respetar a los grandes simios vemos que el resto de los animales sintientes también las cumplen.

Asimismo, Pedro Galvão presentará una comunicación con el título “Consequencialismo, contratualismo e a importância da espécie”. Por mi parte, presentaré una comunicación acerca de cuestiones de transitividad, problemas de metodología en teoría del valor, que son aplicables directamente a la ética animal. Tienen que ver con qué hacer cuando tenemos un conflicto entre nuestras intuiciones. (Por ejemplo: mucha gente encuentra contraintuitivo el antiespecismo: si nuestras intuiciones particulares fuesen aquello que hemos de seguir en cada caso, tendrían que rechazarlo. Pero mucha de esa gente tiene también fuertes intuiciones contra conclusiones que se siguen cuando no se rechaza el especismo. Y esa es una razón para que tengan que aceptar el antiespecismo pese a sus intuiciones iniciales contra este).

La presencia de estas comunicaciones en este congreso es otra muestra de que la consideración moral de los animales va consiguiendo cada vez más terreno en el ámbito de la ética, aunque sea poco a poco.

Este congreso se celebrará del 1 al 3 de junio se celebrará en la Facultad de Filosofía de la Universidad del País Vasco, en Donosti. En este enlace podéis ver su programa general.

Una buena noticia es que esta mesa sobre ética animal es una de las más numerosas de todo el congreso, con un total de 17 comunicaciones. Ello es una excelente señal, pues muestra el interés creciente que existe acerca de este tema.

Most people’s attitude towards natural evils, and in particular predation, is a rather simplistic one. In fact, most people tend to see these evils as something good. In this post, I want to present an example of this attitude. It’s something we can see very clearly in this loathsome video:

This ghastly attitude of celebration of predation and other natural processes which means death and suffering for animals is at odds with the moral consideration of their interests.

There is a widespread view of nature as a pristine idyllic place in which animals live in paradisiacal conditions. This, unfortunately, is wrong. The scene this video shows is everyday life in nature.

We should definitely go beyond the disgusting attitude of celebration of animal suffering and death in nature displayed in this video. In order to do that, we should start by acknowledging that animals suffer terribly and die in many different ways in nature. There is no reason to keep this fact hidden. It is something we should be able to consider. Insofar as we are concerned with the interests of sentient beings, we should not dismiss this issue.

In fact, we should be able to change our view of natural processes and our attitude toward it. I really think that this is an issue we should think about.

Mi objetivo es aprovechar todo lo posible esas cinco semanas para llevar a cabo el máximo número de eventos en el máximo número de ciudades.
